What does the GAPP Family Caregiver Option cover?
FCO covers personal support: bathing, dressing, meals and help moving around. It does not cover skilled nursing tasks, which still need a licensed nurse.
Who can be a GAPP FCO caregiver?
A parent or other legally responsible adult who lives with the child can be hired by the nursing agency. The agency runs a background check and fingerprinting, checks CPR, and trains you.
What should I ask my agency before choosing FCO?
- What will I be paid per hour, and how is it paid?
- Do my child's skilled nursing hours stay the same if I do FCO?
- Can my personal support hours be reduced at review, and why?
- What training and checks are required, and who pays for them?
- What happens to my child's care if I stop or cannot work a shift?
Ask for the answers in writing.
Could my paid FCO hours be cut later?
We do not know yet, and we will not guess. FCO covers personal support only, and hours at review follow medical need and the caregiver skills checklist. Whether personal support hours can drop as a parent gets more skilled is a question we are putting to the state. Ask your agency to answer it in writing before you sign.
How does GAPP Check help with FCO?
GAPP Check helps you get the five answers above in writing, compares what different agencies offer for FCO, and keeps your child's skilled nursing record accurate so FCO does not quietly replace nursing your child still needs.
